2008 Fair Ambassador's Message

2008 Markham Fair Ambassador Sarah MountA big “Fair” greeting to all of you! What a whirl wind of fun and excitement it has been for me representing the Fair. The four days of the Fair go by far too quickly, and before you know it, it’s “tear down Tuesday”.     My memories of last year’s Fair started even before the Fair did with a promotion of the Fair at Markville Mall. It was like planting a seed in people’s mind that the best four day Fair in Canada was fast approaching.

Once the Fair began, and with Andrea Pohlmann and Kelly Davis rounding out the Ambassador Team, we visited just about every event possible and handed out ribbons. The  ride up in the Markham Hydro bucket truck was almost as up lifting, as singing with Shania Twin. Watching the demolition derby was a smashing success and the traditional cow milking was a lot of fun. Riding on the wagon in the 6 hitch heavy horse competition was awesome.

The President’s Banquet is where you really get the opportunity to see just how many volunteers work at making Markham Fair such a huge success. To every one of you I say “Way to go and THANK YOU!”

Late last fall, I walked with other Fair Family members in both the Markham and Stouffville Santa Claus Parades. It was chilly but loads of fun.
In February 2009, I attended the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies conference in Toronto and in August 2009, I will be proudly representing Markham Fair at the Canadian National Exhibition’s Fair Ambassador Competition.

I want to say thank you to the Committee Chairs and the Board of Directors. Your experience and guidance makes the Fair run as smooth as it does. I also would like to congratulate Blair Seeley on a job well done as the Fair President for 2009.  I wish 2009 President, Karen Murphy, all the luck and good weather that she can possibly have.
Taking a piece from my speech at the President’s Banquet, I feel we must maintain our heritage, stand our rural ground, and keep this Fair alive for years to come. The Markham and East York Agricultural Society is an important part of our history. It is up to us to remember our past, show it to the present, and preserve it for the future.

Sincerely,

Sarah Mount, 2008 Markham Fair Ambassador
