Markham Fair Prize Books - It’s that simple to enter!

Look for a Section from the Prize Books. Pick the Section and best class that matches your entry. Fill out the appropriate Entry Form. Be sure to read the General Rules and Regulations. Bring the form into the Markham Fair Office on or before September 15, 2011, 8PM, with the appropriate entry fees.

Section 11 – Youth

(Eighteen years & under)

Before entering this class, please refer to the additional rules for homecraft as well as the following:

* Closing date for entry forms: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 by 8:00 p.m.* Will be strictly enforced.

Additional Rules:

  1. This Section is open to all juniors who are 18 years of age or less as of September 30, 2011.
  2. No work shall be entered for more than one year.
  3. Work must not be older than two years.
  4. All entries must be the work of the exhibitor.
  5. Only one exhibitor per entry form. Please state the exhibitor’s age on the entry form.
  6. An exhibitor may enter only one exhibit per Class.
  7. All entries are to be brought to the General Exhibits building on Tuesday, Sept. 27th, 2011 between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. No exhibits will be removed from the General Exhibits building before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2nd 2011.
  8. All Exhibitor stubs (bottom portion of entry tags) MUST be presented in order to collect exhibits.
  9. All baking is to be put on disposable plates and then enclosed in a zip lock bag.
  10. No mixes or prepared fillings are to be used except where specified.
  11. An entry fee of 25¢ will be charged for each entry plus a $5.00 exhibitor fee.

Smucker Foods of Canada Co. - Smucker’s “Family Favourite Recipe” Baking contests will offer $10.00 first place, $6.00 second place and $4.00 third place prizes for the baking section of both the 10 & Under and 11 & over categories; there will also be a $50.00 prize in each category for the child who has the highest points in the baking section.

Reesor Family in Canada – $10.00 & Rosette (Class #14).

Markham Guild of Village Crafts (Donna Ross Memorial) – $25.00 & Rosette (Class #49)

The large plaques will be engraved and remain at Markham Fair in the showcase. The winner in each category will receive a keeper plaque.

The 2011 Theme For 10 & Under Is: “Canadian Harvest”

10 & Under – Classes #1-35:

Remember to read directions carefully – don’t be disqualified.

***Check #91 if you would like to enter chocolate chip cookies to compete with other fairs at the District #5 Convention. You must win at Markham Fair to qualify. ***

  1. Chocolate chip cookies. 4 on a small disposable plate.
  2. One cookie with the theme on a small disposable plate. Judged on decoration, not flavour.
  3. Rice Krispie squares – any shape. 4 on a small disposable plate.
  4. Banana Muffins. Mix allowed. 4 on a disposable plate.
  5. 1/2 Chocolate cake – girls only. Mix allowed, iced. Judged on taste only.
  6. 1/2 Chocolate cake – boys only. Mix allowed, iced. Judged on taste only.
  7. Decorated cake using theme. Artificial base. Judged on decoration only.
  8. Create an invitation to a Barn Raising.
  9. Make a treat paper bag using theme. Total height not to exceed 30cm
  10. Make a harvest centre piece from recycled material. Size not to exceed 30 x 30 cm.
  11. Make a themed picture frame. Ready to hang or stand.
  12. Make a wooden spoon Scarecrow.
  13. Make a pop-up Thanksgiving card.
  14. Create a collage using the Canadian Harvest theme. Size not to exceed 1/2 sheet of Bristol board.
  15. Create a Canadian Harvest decoration from something useless, not to exceed 30 x 30 cm.
  16. Make a Canadian Harvest hat – any medium.
  17. Dress your teddy bear for a square dance. (Handmade, not store bought).
  18. Decorate a small apple basket.
  19. Decorate a pop bottle to look like a farmer’s wife.
  20. Make a wearable mask to look like a farm animal.
  21. Make a cracker for a Thanksgiving meal, any medium.
  22. Any other article.
  23. Make a picture using Canadian grains. Not to exceed ½ sheet of Bristol board. Cover with plastic wrap.
  24. Design a door knob hanger using theme.
  25. Decorate a small pumpkin.
  26. Make a welcome sign for your room using Canadian wild flowers. Not to exceed 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.
  27. A Lego harvest design. No kits. Not to exceed 18″ x 18″.
  28. Make a popsicle stick wagon.
  29. Create a farm animal using paper mache.
  30. Make a place mat for a Thanksgiving meal.
  31. Make a snow globe using the Canadian Harvest theme.
  32. Decorate a shoe for the farmer’s daughter.
  33. Make a Turkey using vegetables.
  34. Decorate a barn using a shoe box.
  35. Compose a poem to celebrate a Canadian Harvest.

11 & Over – Classes: #36-70

  7. Decorated cake using theme. Artificial base. Judged on decoration only.
  8. Design a Canadian Harvest Fair popup card.
  9. Create a wind sock using theme.
  10. Decorate a gourd to look like a farm animal.
  11. Take a picture from a magazine using theme, cut in half and mount the half picture to an 8 ½” x 11″ sheet of paper, draw in the missing half. Any medium.
  12. Make a corn husk doll.
  13. Create a shoebox diorama using theme.

  15. Write a story about Organic Farming. (about 100 words)

  25. Design a scarecrow from plasticine or clay. Must be self supporting.
  26. Make papier mache bread basket.
  27. Decorate a vegetable using theme.
  28. Make a milk stool, any medium. Not to exceed 12″ tall.
  29. Create pop bottle doll to look like a farmer.
  30. Create a T-Shirt with a farm theme.
  31. Create a poster with the provincial crest or provincial flower. Not to exceed 1/2 sheet of Bristol board.
  32. Make ear muffs for a farmer.
  33. Make a snow globe using theme.
  34. Make a door stopper for the barn door. Any medium.
  35. Decorate a plate using theme.

The 2011 Theme For Pre-School Is
“Canadian Harvest”

Pre-School Section (5 years and under) – Classes #71-90:

Please make sure that the work is done by the child,

with parents supervising only.

  1. Decorate a styrofoam egg.
  2. Make a noisemaker to scare the crows.
  3. Create a marshmallow farm figure.
  4. Make a harvest picture using seeds on a paper plate.
  5. Create a doorstop using theme.
  6. Decorate a gift bag using theme.
  7. Decorate a picture frame. Any medium.
  8. Create a napkin ring from a toilet paper roll.
  9. Create a vegetable print painting using theme. Not to exceed 11″ x 14.
  10. Decorate a paper plate for Thanksgiving.
  11. Make a harvest picture using finger paints.
  12. Make a wooden spoon scarecrow.
  13. Make a collage place mat for Thanksgiving.
  14. Decorate a farmer’s hat.
  15. Draw a barn. Any medium. Not to exceed 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.
  16. Decorate a rock for a paperweight.
  17. Make a cotton ball farm animal.
  18. Make a harvest decoration using an ice cream cone.
  19. Make a collage farm. Not to exceed 1/2 sheet of Bristol board.
  20. Make a display of coloured leaves. Not to exceed 1/2 sheet of Bristol board.

1/2 sheet of Bristol = 36 cm X 56 cm.

Open Class #91

O.A.A.S. is extending an Open Class to children between the ages of 10 and 15 years as of December 31, 2011.

  1. Chocolate Chip Cookies. 8 on a small disposable plate in a zip lock bag. Cookies must be no larger than
    3″ (6.75 cm) and no smaller than 2″ (5 cm).

The winner will be entered into the competition at District #5 in November, 2011.
More details will be given to the winner.

Youth Poster Competition
Classes #92 to 94

Must be hand drawn by the student.

Poster size: maximum: 12″ x 18″ (30 cm x 46 cm); minimum: 11″ x 17″ (28 cm x 43 cm).

Each entry must be mounted on a black art card with a 2″ border.

  1. “Promoting Your Fair” (Jr. Kindergarten – Grade 4).
  2. “Promoting Your Fair” (Grade 5 – 8).
  3. “Promoting Your Fair” (Grade 9 – 12).

The winner of the poster competition at the Fair will be eligible to enter in the District competition. The District winner will receive $10 for first prize and will compete for prizes at the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (O.A.A.S.) Convention in February, where a grand prize will be awarded.

O.A.A.S. Prizes:
1st: $25.00 and plaque; 2nd: $15.00; 3rd: $10.00).

One entry per Fair at the District competition.

Name of Fair, contact person, owner of poster and school represented to be clearly labelled on the back.

  1. O.A.A.S. Judging Standards:
    Overall appearance – 20 points.
  2. Attract and hold attention – 30 points.
  3. Competition theme clear – 40 points.
  4. Quality materials/end product – 10 points.
