4-H Activities

The primary purpose of the 4-H Program is the Personal Development of Youth.

4-H Wants You!

If you are between the ages of 10-21 you can join 4-H regardless of whether you live in town or in the country. You will belong to a club that focuses on a specific project and meets approximately 6 times a year. Clubs in York Region include: Livestock clubs such as Dairy, Beef, Rabbit and Poultry; Fun & Leisure clubs which involve Woodworking, Sewing and Crafts; Food clubs such as Baking and Farm Machinery clubs which focus on Plowing and Farm Safety. Topics for new clubs could include leadership, environment, conservation and outdoor activities. Before entering this Section, please refer to the General Rules and Regulations as well as the following:

Additional Rules:

  1. All entrants must be a registered 4-H member!
  2. Entries must be made by sending a Markham Fair 4-H entry form to the Markham Fair by September 16th at 8 p.m. (excluding Section 56, entries made day of show).
  3. No entry fee is required for 4-H classes only, but there will be a $2.00 late charge on all entries received after September 16th. Entries received on September 29th or later will be charged a $10.00 late charge. P.I.S. forms must accompany all Dairy and Beef entry forms. All P.I.S. forms must be date-stamped June 1, 2010 or earlier by the Provincial Coordinator.
  4. No animals are to leave the barn before 5:00 p.m. on show day.
  5. Please see Section 23 - Holstein Cattle - for the pre 4-H class.
  6. Someone must be with the animals at all times.
  7. No Entry can be used from previous years

Harvey Brown Memorial 4-H Award:

The late Harvey Brown was well known for his interest in youth activities, especially those occurring at the Markham Fair. In recognition of his support of 4-H activities over the years, the York Region 4-H Association will sponsor the Harvey Brown Memorial 4-H Award which started in 2005. The recipient of this annual award must be a registered 4-H member in York Region and will receive a small keeper plaque, with his/her name engraved on a larger perpetual plaque which will be on display at Markham Fair. The presentation of the award will be made at the November York Region 4-H Awards and recognition night. The recipient of this award will be determined based on participation in 4-H events that are published in the Markham Fair Prize List as official 4-H events. These include any of the 4-H livestock shows (club and interclub) as well as any entries in the 4-H General Exhibits. A point system will be determined based on # of entries in these official 4-H events as well as the individuals placing in each of the 4-H events entered.

Entries to be set up on Tuesday, September 28th between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and removed on Sunday, October 3rd between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Class:

  1. 4-H Club Displays: Open to all 4-H Clubs in York that participated in a 4-H project during the Fall of 2009 or during the 2010 year.
  • Exhibits shall be based on an educational aspect of the 4-H project and prepared by club members or youth leaders.
  • Exhibits shall be displayed on a table and shall be no more than 3’ wide.
  • All exhibits will be judged by scorecards on the following

Prize Money - Classes #2-7:

1st - $20.00; 2nd - $18.00; 3rd - $16.00; 4th - $14.00; 5th - $12.00; 6th - $10.00. All other worthy entries: $5.00.

Class:

  1. Artwork: Create a 4-H thank you card on card stock, not to exeed 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches when folded. All art work must be hand drawn and illustrated. Judging will be based on use of logo, neatness, quality of art work and the thank you message.
  2. Needlecraft: Sew and hand stitch a pillowcase using a pattern from www.conkerrcancer.org and decorate it to show your 4-H spirit. The pillowcase should fit a standard size pillow and be able to be used on a pillow. Judging to be based on quality of sewing, stitches and design.
  3. Photography: Members are to submit one photograph of their most memorable 4-H moment. The photograph must have been taken by the exhibitor during 2010 at a 4-H meeting or event. Photograph is to be 5”x7” colour print, mounted on a piece of black bristol board measuring 6”x8”. The tag must be on the bottom right hand corner.
  4. Baking: Brownies: there should be three small brownies placed on a small paper plate and placed in a Ziploc bag. Brownies will be judged based on appearance, taste and texture.
    Chocolate 4-H Brownies:
    1 cup butter/margarine
    2 cups sugar
    4 eggs
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    3/4 cup cocoa
    2 tsp vanilla
    Preheat oven to 350F. Melt butter/margarine, stir in sugar, then add eggs. Sift and add flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa then mix in vanilla. Bake for 30 minutes in a greased 9”x13” pan.
  5. Essay: Members are to write a 500 word essay describing “a positive 4-H friendship I’ve made”. The essay is to typed using Times New Roman and 14 font, single spaced. Judging will be based on the message of the essay, grammar, spelling, and proper essay formatting.
  6. Poster: Create a poster promoting safe ways of handling livestock. Poster must fit on a half piece of Bristol Board. Poster to be judged by the ability to promote safe ways of handling livestock, creativity and uniqueness.
