Straw Creatures for Markham Fair

Fields are filled with rows of corn, bales of straw, and apple orchards . . . but looking more closely in the fields of Markham in September you might be surprised! 

Large creatures take form in the fields to help celebrate the upcoming Markham Fair!  These straw creatures are in fact not creatures at all, but bales of straw representing things from the Markham Fair, like our mascot Fair Crow, who in the fields is about 1 story high! 

This year, we ask everyone (who wants to, of course!) take part, to create your own Markham Fair fashioned straw creature!  The contest closes September 29th, so put on your straw cap, and let your imagination go wild!

Straw Creature Decorating Contest

Use your imagination to decorate one or more large, round or rectangular bales of hay (or straw, if hay is not available).

General Guidelines

Create a Road Side or Entrance Display utilizing a variety of agriculture products (hay, grain, straw, corn, sunflowers, pumpkins, potatoes, flowers, etc.). Farm implements and/or equipment (rakes, wheelbarrows, ploughs, hoes, etc.) may be used.

1. Entry Fee: No entry or exhibitor fee required.
2. Minimum size: 4 feet by 4 feet.  Maximum size: unlimited.
3. Sign with Fair dates placed beside the Straw Creature to be provided by the Markham Fair.
4. Markham Fair will come and visit each entry to take professional photos of them.
5. Please include clear directions to your straw creature’s location.
6. Display must be within viewing distance (30 metres) from roadway.
7. Bales to be decorated in a manner appropriate to advertise the Markham Fair.
8. Entry forms must be received at Markham Fair office by September 27, 2009.
9. Display must be completed and ready prior to September 27, 2009.  If completed before the mentioned date, please notify the Markham Fair as we need to put up the Markham Fair Sign near the creature.

You don't have to be a farmer to get in on the contest - you can beg, borrow, or buy a big bale of hay or straw!  These decorative displays can make your property very eye catching for people traveling by your property and the Markham Fair would appreciate having as many displays throughout the area as possible to help advertise our fair.

1. Business Prize: 1st - $100.00, 2nd - $75.00, 3rd - $50.00
2. All Residents Prize: 1st - $100.00, 2nd - $75.00, 3rd - $50.00

First Place Entries will receive a family fair pass for the weekend and World’s Finest Shows Ride-All-Day passes.
Remaining worthy entries receive family fair passes for the weekend.
