Patricia (Bonnie) MacAloney
1994 Homecraft Past President
By Ann Parker
On May 8, 2008 the Markham Fair family lost one of its most energetic and long-serving members. It is great sadness that marks the passing of Patricia (Bonnie) MacAloney. In her 33 years as a volunteer she was always an enthusiastic supporter of the Markham Fair. She took on many roles within the Fair organization. During all her years at the Fair she was a member of the Domestic Science committee, working her way to Chair of the committee for several years, and then went on to become President of the Homecraft Division in 1994. Also during this time she was on the Advertising and Promotions committee for 11 years and on the Racetrack committee for 16 years.
Bonnie’s commitment to continuing the work and education of the Fair led her into work outside our local fair. Bonnie was the Homecraft representative for District #5 of the O.A.A.S. (Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies) for two years. She was a Judge for many years in the Foods and Stitchery sections of numerous fairs throughout Ontario and also taught many times at judging schools to help improve the quality of the judging for the fairs.
Bonnie was married to Brian for over 40 years, a devoted mother to James (Pam) and Michelle, and a grandmother to her two beloved grandchildren, Victoria and Gavin.
After her family relocated to the Stouffville area from Peterborough, her life centred on this community. She attended Stouffville high school, made her home here after she was married, raised her family and was a member of Stouffville United Church.
Bonnie will be greatly missed by her loving family and all her friends at the Markham Fair. We will miss that smile and enthusiasm as we chatted in the lunchroom, trailer, out on the grounds, watching her with those blankets for the winning horses on the track, or seeing her sitting in the Information booth with Michelle, giving out directions and suggestions for a great day at the Fair.
