So…just which portion is the hook and which portion is the loop?
The hook portion of Velcro® brand fasteners looks like an upside-down letter “J”. Hook is often described in different terms – the “rough” or the “bristly” portion. The hook portion engages into the loop component of our panels. The Photography Section panels are covered in the “soft”, “fuzzy”or “carpet” portion of the Velcro®. **Note: Exhibitors please supply your own Velcro®.**

Can you please inform myself as to where i can purchase the velcroe and J hook to enter my photographs.
Thank you so much for your support.
Also can you enter 8X 10 prints ?

    • Markham Fair September 12, 2011 at 8:17 pm - Reply

You can purchase the ‘hook’ portion of the velcro from Michaels Arts & Crafts Store. Other Exhibitors tell us they’ve purchased them from Home Hardware and Walmart. The ‘hook’ portion is the side of the velcro which is rough like a cat’s tongue. The loop portion is what covers our display panels and enables your prints to stick. You can usually find velcro sold in packages of ‘dots’ or on a roll with the adhesive on the back. Peel and stick is much cleaner and stronger than string and tape. See you at the fair!

Is bristol board okay to mount my pictures on? And how exactly am i supposed to attach them to the bristol board?

    • Markham Fair September 23, 2011 at 2:49 pm - Reply

Natasha, Thanks for your question/comment. Bristol board can work. Matt board works even better. The more rigid the mounting board then the less chance for the photo to curl if there is humidity in the building during the fair. You can use 2-sided tape to attach your photos to the board. Black’s and Walmart sell photo adhesive strips. They are sold in a roll that you peel off like stickers. Some people use glue however the results are not as good. Good luck and see you at the fair!

The tags that are to go on the backs of the photos, with the exhibitor’s name and entry number, can they just be a regular piece of paper or are they special tags that need to be filled out? If they are special tags how and/or where do I get them? Thanks for taking the time to reply, and have a great day! Cathy

    • Markham Fair September 4, 2012 at 10:13 pm - Reply

Cathy, Thanks for your comments/questions. Write your name and phone number on the back of your prints, just in case the tag becomes separated from the print during the judging or during the fair.
We print the tags for you. After your entry form has been submitted (sep.13), our team of Staff Support Specialists will enter in your form and the thousands of other forms we receive. When you drop off your prints on September 22 (Sat), your tags will be waiting for you. You’ll just have to tape the tags to your prints. Nice and easy! Good luck with your exhibits! – Doug

I have entered the “Open Digital” contest a number of times over the past few years and there has always been some level of confusion at the Fair office when I bring in my form with payment as I have requested to get the passes at that time (to save another trip up to the fairgrounds). The confusion relates to the fact that since most exhibits are “physical” in nature, they tell me that they only give passes out when exhibits are brought in. Since the pictures are emailed in, the only thing that is physical is the form. Can you please confirm I will be able to get the passes when I bring in the form by the 13th? (I have been able to in the past but usually after the staff have to ask around and sort out what to do – same each year 🙂 )
thanks and looking forward to the fair!

Brett, Thanks for your comment/question. Our Staff Support group try very hard to be accommodating and serve as best they can. Truth is, we are making an exception to give your passes to you early. The deadline for entries is on the 13th. We’ll still be inputting into our database until Wednesday of the following week. We are not prepared to hand out passes until after all the entries have been input and the list of exhibitors has been generated. It would be a great help if you could pick up your passes when they are ready, for Photography that means on the 22nd. Although if you wanted them a little earlier, they’ll probably be ready on the 19th. However, all the Photography passes are distributed on the 22nd. Good luck with your exhibits! We always love to see them. See you at the fair. – Doug

For mounting surface can we use foam board instead of mat board? As mat board is so expensive.
    Thanks

    • Markham Fair September 5, 2013 at 3:39 pm - Reply

Hi Melissa, Thanks for the great question! Foam board is an excellent mounting choice. For sure you can use it. Let us know the best place you’ve found to buy it. – See you at the fair!

if I enter a photo sequence in the open colour section, can the print be a collage of multiple photos or must it be individual prints?

    • Markham Fair September 24, 2014 at 2:48 pm - Reply

Hi Nicole, Thanks for your comment/question. Section 9, Class 47 is a physical collage of individual prints.

  7. Nadine September 8, 2015 at 3:39 pm - Reply

We are wondering whether any photo editing is permitted on submitted photos – many thanks!

    • Markham Fair September 8, 2015 at 4:43 pm - Reply

Hi Nadine, that’s a good question! Thanks for posting your comment. Here’s the answer.
      Photography Competition, Not Photoshop Competition
While technology continues to improve in the field of photography both in the camera and on computer, the Markham Fair photography competition is designed to showcase your skills as a photographer. Camera design and features make it possible for us to capture images in situations where it would not have been possible years ago. High ISO and image stabilization are just some of the features which can help a photographer achieve a successful image. Computer programs and photo editing applications have also become more user-friendly and contain many ways to “enhance” the image in a post-production environment of your desktop or tablet.
However it is the post-production manipulation of the images that this competition does not support. This competition is about your ability to capture that special image and present it in print form without obvious enhancements. This is a photography competition, not a Photoshop® Competition. Your images will be judged for their quality of lighting, timing and creativity. Obvious image manipulations such as HDR will be disqualified.
We understand there will be arguments in favour of manipulations. There are even some cameras which can create HDR images during capture. Please keep in mind that this competition is about capturing images in a natural process. We strive for a level playing field where the competition is fair for all amateur photography exhibitors.
