For years now, EastGen, an innovative company that specializes in biotech and genetic material related to dairy heifers, beef, and goats, has sponsored future dairy leaders across Ontario through its youth events. One of these events, the EastGen Challenge, has young people showcasing their heifers in front of judges, who select the best cow based on certain guidelines. The core mission of the EastGen Challenge is to promote the Canadian dairy industry and proper animal husbandry, which is especially important for the latest generations. Markham Fairgrounds was proud to have hosted the East division of the EastGen Challenge this year on July 12th and 13th, especially because of how well the Challenge ties in with our agricultural roots.

The Challenge lasts for two days. On the first day, contestants arrive with their cows in tow and prep the heifers for the showcase on day two. Preparation involves painting the spots of the cows so that they look picture-perfect, as well as feeding and resting the animals.

On the second day of the challenge, countless youths showcased their family’s cows, all hoping to impress the judges and move on to the next round. All of the contestants did an amazing job showcasing their cows!

Congratulations to all the contestants!
