General Manager

The Markham and East York Agricultural Society is in search of a General Manager to lead day to day operations of Markham Fairgrounds and manage the ongoing success of Markham Fair.

Job Summary:

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with business management and development experience who desires to lead Markham Fair in its mission to be a vibrant community partner in the celebration and promotion of agriculture, rural living and sustainability, guided by core values of Integrity, Compassion, Commitment and Cooperation. 

We are looking for an energetic individual, who thrives in a fast-paced environment, wishes to be part of a community-based organization, and possess the ability to learn new skills. This position is responsible for the promotion and operations of Markham Fair, fairgrounds, facility rentals and the coaching and support of employees.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma in Business, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in progressively responsible management positions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience promoting sales and business development.
  • Project management experience in planning, preparation, promotion, and execution of multiple events
  • Knowledge and experience of land and building maintenance. Ability and desire to establish and maintain effective working relationships with external and internal contacts including members of the Board, volunteers, employees, vendors, clients, and customers.
  • Experience with principles and practices of annual budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Ability to work varied hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills coupled with strong negotiation skills.
  • Possess the ability to hire, train and manage employees.

Markham Fair, one of Canada oldest country fairs, occurs annually on the weekend before Thanksgiving and hosts upwards of 60,000 attendees. Directed and supported by a Board of Directors, full and part-time employees and over 800 volunteers, the General Manager has year-round responsibility for the management of all events and activities at Markham Fairgrounds.
