As a member of the community for 172 years, Markham Fair believes in the importance of fostering community development through helping others and giving back. As an agricultural fair, we know the importance of farmers working together to produce a plentiful harvest, and we believe that these same values extend to cultivating growth across our local communities.
We strive to promote community development by hosting multiple events throughout the year that target all local residents. In addition, our community garden provides a space for the public to come together through gardening and sharing tips and tricks with one another. The Markham Fair also encourages elementary school children through our Lend a Hand campaign. Volunteering has a special meaning at the Markham Fair, because thanks to our amazing volunteers, whether working throughout the year or during the Fair Weekend, the annual Markham Fair has been a success for nearly 172 years!
Markham Fair’s Lend a Hand Campaign
For the second year, Markham Fair brought its Lend a Hand campaign to elementary schools in the communities of Markham and Stouffville. Throughout May and June, our team visited schools to promote “volunteerism” and “community building” by challenging local students to “lend a hand” to their community.
The team conducted assemblies to teach about the difficulties faced by our pioneer settlers, and related these to the difficulties that many newcomers to Markham face today. They taught students of the importance of community building through acts of kindness, volunteering, and generosity.
Students were encouraged to make commitments to lend a hand to their communities. Click here to see some of the artwork they did to showcase their commitments! Schools were also challenged to participate in the Lend a Hand food drive. Four schools accepted the challenge, and thanks to them a large donation was made to the Markham Food Bank!
The Lend a Hand campaign has been supported and endorsed by local mayors and the Region, as well as by both the York Regional District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board. We look forward to running this campaign again next year and seeing more students lending a hand! For information about how to register your school, click here.
Volunteer Opportunities at the Markham Fair
The Markham Fair wouldn’t be possible without the help of the hundreds of volunteers who lend a hand every year. Whether they volunteer their time throughout the year by serving on one of our committees, or help out over the four days of the Markham Fair, they are a fundamental component of the work we do. We can never thank them enough for their commitment, and always look forward to working with them over the Markham Fair weekend!
