Employment and Volunteer Opportunities

The Markham Fair employs many people to produce events throughout the year as well as during the busiest time which is Markham Fair – ‘Always the Weekend Before Thanksgiving’. Employment and volunteer opportunities are broken down into five major areas:

Full Time Paid – Throughout the year

Full Time Paid


Position: General Manager

Markham and East York Agricultural Society is in search of a General Manager to lead day to day operations of the Markham Fairgrounds and manage the ongoing success of the Markham Fair.  Markham Fair, one of Canada oldest country fairs, occurs annually on the weekend before Thanksgiving and hosts upwards of 60,000 attendees. Directed and supported by a 24 member Board of Directors, seven full and part-time employees and over 800 volunteers the General Manager has year-round responsibility for the management of all events and activities at Markham Fairgrounds.

Job Summary:

If you are an energetic individual, have a passion for detail, thrive in a fast-paced environment, wish to be part of a community based company and possess the ability to learn new skills then this opportunity is for you.  Using considerable independent judgement and initiative, the General Manager executes all aspects of the operations of the fairgrounds including the Markham Fair. Working under the direction of the Fair’s Board of Directors, this position is responsible for marketing and promotion of Markham Fairgrounds and related community events, facility rentals and the coaching and support of Fair employees.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with business management and development experience who desires to lead Markham Fair in its mission to be a vibrant community partner in the celebration and promotion of agriculture, rural living and sustainability.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in progressively responsible management positions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience promoting sales and business development.
  • Project management practices and procedures for the planning, preparation, promotion, and execution of multiple events
  • Knowledge and experience of land and building maintenance. Ability and desire to establish and maintain effective working relationships with external and internal contacts including members of the Board, employees, vendors, clients and customers.
  • Experience with principles and practices of annual budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Ability to work varied hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills coupled with strong negotiation skills.
  • Possess the ability to hire, train and manage employees.

General Manager Position Available


Position: Assistant Property Manager

Job Summary:

Markham Fair has a full time position available for an Assistant Property Manager.

If you are an energetic individual, have a passion for detail, thrive in a fast-paced environment, wish to be part of a community based company and possess the ability to learn new skills then this opportunity is for you. The Assistant Property Manager will contribute to Markham Fair’s goals by positively representing Markham Fair to our Clients. The Assistant Property Manager ensures excellent and responsive service to Client requests, and provides a clean, well maintained and secure buildings and grounds. Prepare facility for setup and take-down of ongoing rentals, events and annual agricultural fair.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Platform License
  • Drivers licence “G”
  • Experience in operating variety of equipment, including tractors, skid steers, scissor lift, small hand tools.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and general maintenance programs
  • Working from heights (an asset)
  • Physically capable of lifting 50 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings
  • Effective Written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Well-developed customer service and sales skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Day to Day operation of a multi-purpose Rental Facility on a 100-acre property.
  • Perform minor building, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, painting and repairs as necessary.
  • Implement preventative maintenance measures
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies

Assistant Property Manager Position Available


Position: Office and Grounds Staff

The Markham Fair has a small staff of full time employees who manage, market and maintain the facilities on McCowan Road all year round.

From time-to-time we require additional help to manage the needs of large renters on our property – so we are recruiting a new member of our facilities management team.  We are looking for someone that is interested in working when needed (with advance notice), usually in the evenings or on weekends, as required.  The team member would be responsible for:

  • Supervision of the facility
  • Responding to customer requests
  • Cleaning of washrooms, hallways
  • Removal of garbage as needed
  • Responding to electrical or mechanical outages

The pay will be $14 per hour.

Facilities Management Team Member Position Available


Full Time Committee Member

Position: Committee Member – Volunteer

General Responsibilities:
The Markham Fair also has a large volunteer base of 800+ Committee Members who meet throughout the year to plan and all come together for 4 days to help make the Fair a  success.

If you are joining a Markham Fair Committee for the first time, please contact the Chairperson of the committee to find out if volunteer or committee positions are available. The committee Chairperson must approve your volunteer application.

Part Time Paid

Position: General Operations Crew Member

General Responsibilities:
An Operations Crew Member is responsible for the operation of dolly carts and garbage bins. These positions maintain site cleanliness including stage, roadways and on-site garbage removal. This position is responsible for assisting with the set-up and takedown of various on-site events, including nightly affairs.

Applicants must be self-motivated, in good physical condition and have the
ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Previous Markham Fair Maintenance
experience is an asset.

General Operations Crew Member Positions  Available.


Position: Security Attendant

General Responsibilities:
Security Attendant work as part of the security team to ensure the safety of the Markham Fair, its patrons and volunteers. General responsibilities include: interacting with guests to provide direction, clarifying information relating to site operations, crowd control and assisting to diffuse situations.

There is a minimum age limit of 21 of the Security Position at Markham Fair.  Applicants must have a general knowledge of law enforcement and be able to understand and apply generally accepted safety and security techniques. Applicants must possess superior public relations skills, excellent verbal communications skills and be willing to work a shift schedule, including the entire four (4) days of the Markham Fair.

Security Attendant Positions Available.


Position: Parking Attendant

General Responsibilities:
Parking attendants are responsible for pedestrian and vehicle access to Markham Fair. These positions involve locating the vehicle into the parking spaces, the cleanliness of the parking lot and responding to guest inquiries.

Applicants must have previous customer service experience and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision. Applicants must be available to work irregular hours during the four (4) days of the Fair. Both full-time and student positions are available in this area.

Part Time Volunteer

Position: Lost Childrens

General Responsibilities:
Responsible for supervising and ensuring a safe environment for all lost children,
visiting teachers and/or parents. Lost Children part-time volunteers are
responsible for leading in the search of a lost child or missing parents.
This position is responsible for informing and updating the Control Centre,
Security Officers and Volunteers of the situation. This position coordinates
response to all lost children emergency situations on site (similar to 911
operators) as well as dispatches the call to emergency staff on hand, and
maintains logs.

Candidates must have previous training/experience with child supervision in
a camp, day care or school setting, or equivalent education (E.C.E.). Candidates
must be at least 15 years of age. Applicants must possess excellent
organizational and administrative skills with the ability to work efficiently
and effectively in a high-pressure environment under minimal supervision and
be willing to work shift work.

Look for a Section from the Prize Books. Pick the Section and best class that matches your entry. Fill out the appropriate Entry Form. Be sure to read the General Rules and Regulations. Bring the form into the Markham Fair Office on or before September 13, 2018, 8PM, with the appropriate entry

Rental Facilities

Markham Fair Grounds, located in York Region, can accommodate a variety of functions and gatherings. We are the host location for large trade and consumer shows as well as corporate celebrations, concerts, banquets and other special events.
